Jua Kali Entrepreneurship and Performance—Evidence from the Field
摘要
This chapter investigates the influence of social network characteristics on Jua kali small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMME) performance in Nairobi City County. Employing inferential statistical methods, the chapter evaluates hypotheses concerning the effects of social network size, diversity, strength, and structure on SMMEs’ performance. Correlation and regression analyses reveal that larger social network sizes are associated with slightly reduced performance, possibly due to increased competition among artisans. In contrast, diverse, strong, well-structured networks significantly enhance SMME growth by facilitating access to resources, support, and opportunities. A comprehensive regression model underscores the substantial influence of these network characteristics, particularly diversity and strength, which strongly predict SMME success and growth. All null hypotheses are rejected, affirming the critical role of strategic network development in improving Jua Kali enterprise outcomes. The findings emphasise the importance of cultivating high-quality, diverse, and organised networks to optimise the business performance of microenterprises.
