Researching Microentreprises
摘要
This chapter presents a methodological framework to investigate the performance of Jua Kali small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in Nairobi City County, Kenya. Using an exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach, the research begins with qualitative interviews and focus groups to uncover network dynamics among registered and unregistered artisans across seven trade clusters. These qualitative findings inform a quantitative survey of 394 artisans sampled through multistage probability techniques, including motor vehicle mechanics, tailors, welders, and matatu bodywork artists. The influence of social network attributes such as size, diversity, strength, and structure on the performance of the microenterprises is assessed using validated scales, alongside SMME performance indicators like sales turnover and customer satisfaction. By triangulating qualitative depth with quantitative breadth, this study illuminates social networks’ role in fostering economic resilience in Kenya’s informal sector, offering actionable insights for SMMEs’ sustainable growth.
