APOLO: Vision-Guided Automatization of Surgical Illumination Systems
摘要
Precise and continuous illumination during surgery is essential for patient safety and optimal performance of the medical team. However, traditional lighting systems require frequent manual adjustments, which interrupts the procedure, increases the risk of contamination, and compromises surgeon ergonomics. To address this problem, we developed APOLO, an automated system that detects the surgeon's hand position in real time and autonomously directs light toward the active surgical area, eliminating the need for manual interaction. This approach reduces surgical time, improves workflow efficiency, and preserves sterility in the operating room. Usability was assessed using a System Usability Scale, showing high acceptance among healthcare professionals. APOLO is designed to be easily integrated with existing hospital equipment, facilitating scalability and regulatory viability as an innovative medical technology for the Mexican healthcare system.
