Childhood in the Crossfires: Social Ecologies of Resilience Amid Gang Violence in Haiti
摘要
This chapter offers a summary of the causes and rise of gangs in Haiti, followed by insights on the resilience of children amidst gang-affected communities. Despite ongoing violence and social instability, Haitian children show remarkable resilience that is often overlooked. Using social ecological theory, the chapter discusses how resilience develops through connections with family members, teachers, friends, kind strangers (adults), and the larger community. Readers will learn about protective processes and cultural resources that help children maintain hope, connection, and purpose despite persistent adversity in communities that support them. Practical implications for early childhood teachers and suggestions for further research are included.
