Finding Consolation, Comfort, and Hope Through Picturebooks During Times of School and Community Violence
摘要
In response to the growing prevalence of school and community violence, this chapter explores the use of bibliotherapy and social-emotional learning (SEL) using children’s picturebooks as tools to help families and students process grief, fear, and anxiety. The authors curated and analyzed ten high-quality picturebooks that offer age-appropriate ways for children to rehearse, discuss, and cope with difficult emotions stemming from traumatic events. These books were incorporated into Bitmoji-based digital family literacy bags designed for at-home use, with discussion prompts, read-alouds, and follow-up activities aligned to the five SEL dimensions. Drawing from research in developmental and therapeutic bibliotherapy, this work highlights the power of literature as a proxy for emotional experiences, enabling children to gain insight, build empathy, and imagine paths toward hope and healing. The project emphasizes the teacher’s role in fostering resilience and well-being, even amid tragedies that defy explanation. These resources aim to provide immediate, compassionate support to children and families navigating the aftermath of violence.
