The Impact of River Transport and Tourism on the Wetlands in the Bulgarian Section of the Danube River Basin
摘要
The Danube River stands as the largest international transport artery within the European continent, underscoring its critical role as a conduit connecting more than 19 nations, numerous socio-economic regions, and diverse ecosystems. This study aims to analyze the specific development of transport and tourism-related economic activities within the Bulgarian segment of the Danube and to evaluate their impact on the sustainable development of wetlands in its basin. The research employs innovative methodologies and derives insights from the scientific project “Danube Wetlands and Floodplains Restoration through Systemic, Community-Engaged, and Sustainable Innovative Actions (DaWetRest),” which is part of the European Union’s “Horizon Europe” program under the “Restoration of Oceans, Seas, and Waters” mission. The study proposes solutions and policy recommendations for mitigating environmental risks and promoting the sustainable management of the Danube’s wetlands, as well as its riparian economy and social communities. Also the results indicate that, despite the threats from the unpredictable variations in water levels, it is possible to achieve a balance between the economic utilization of the river and the conservation of its wetlands through the implementation of innovative and sustainable solutions.
