Regional integration and cooperation have generally advanced in virtuous cycles. Nevertheless, these cycles have occasionally faced disruptions. Recent regionalism crises in both the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean differ significantly from earlier ones and present unprecedented challenges for scholars. Of course, disintegration could be just one of several possible outcomes of crises.
