The 1990s witnessed a surge in both the literature on regionalism and the creation of new regional organisations worldwide (Lombaerde et al., Laursen (ed), Comparative regional integration: Europe and beyond, Ashgate, 2010; Risse, Börzel and Risse (eds), The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Regionalism, Oxford University Press, 2016). During this period, regionalism and its associated literature expanded significantly. Notably, although most regional organisations were created outside Europe, many of the theories drew on the European experience; therefore, they are Eurocentric (Acharya, Börzel and Risse (eds), The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Regionalism, Oxford University Press, 2016).

摘要
