Marine Sustainability in the Era of SDGs: Progress, Challenges, and Future Directions
摘要
With increasing global action for the attainment of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), maritime sustainability has become a pivotal battle front in the war on climate change, loss of biodiversity, and resource depletion. The oceans, which blanket over 70% of the planet's surface, are at the center of ecological equilibrium, food security, and the livelihoods of millions of people. The book delves into the complex aspects of marine sustainability under the frame of the SDGs, with special emphasis on SDG 14 (Life Below Water), but also considering its interfaces with climate action, poverty eradication, and sustainable consumption. From an inter-disciplinary perspective, this book reviews the advances in topics such as marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, ocean governance, and pollution management. It emphasizes ongoing issues such as overfishing, habitat destruction, plastic pollution, and weak enforcement of global agreements. The case studies of different geographic areas demonstrate innovative exercise in maritime conservation, policy transformation, and technology. The book offers a future-oriented agenda that can allow one to gain much micro sustainability by integrating scientific studies, policy analysis, and community-based strategies. It demands improved international collaboration, equitable resource use as well as responsive strategies that are needed to make sure that oceanic ecosystems are resilient to environmental and socio-economic stresses.
