Extended Modal Realism for the Cheap
摘要
This chapter explores a competing view to extended modal realism: modal fictionalism. While this view aligns with modal realism in terms of its motivations, it rejects its metaphysical commitments, presenting a version of modal realism without its realism. The ontological benefits and ideological costs of this view are discussed, with the conclusion that the trade-offs are substantial. Ultimately, the differences between the realist and fictionalist positions are questioned, leaving little room for the outright rejection of the realist position.
