This chapter introduces 25 alternative knowledge transfer metrics based on the NHLBI database of Phase II awards. These metrics are categorized as knowledge outflow metrics, knowledge inflow metrics, and two-way knowledge flow metrics. Descriptive statistics are provided for each metric. Four metrics are emphasized and are graphically illustrated in terms of firm employment and Phase II award amounts: licensing agreements, patents received, scientific papers published, and commercialization rates.
