Exploring Student Perspectives on ChatGPT: Knowledge, Attitudes, Concerns, and Usage Patterns at Oman College of Management and Technology

This study explores the ChatGPT usage among students at Oman College of Management and Technology (OCMT), through knowledge, attitudes, concerns, ethics, and usage patterns. A quantitative research approach is adopted and 362 students from various academic programs at OCMT participated in the survey. The survey design and distribution are managed online through Microsoft Forms. The survey results show that 85.6% of the OCMT students are knowledgeable in ChatGPT functionalities. The study also identified the significant challenges associated with the usage of ChatGPT. This includes the negative impact of achieving the educational goals with a mean of 3.87 and standard deviation (SD) of 0.91 and creative writing skills with a mean of 3.45 and SD of 0.88. Among the students, 52.7% recognized the ethical concerns associated with ChatGPT and their legal concerns. The survey results also show that students are using ChatGPT to enhance their academic productivity especially in drafting essays with a high mean score of 3.90 and followed by clarification of academic doubts with a mean score of 3.83. The key recommendations of this research are the need of ethical guidelines and balanced integration of ChatGPT into the existing educational systems to achieve academic goals while maintaining academic integrity, critical writing skills, and creative writing skills.
