One of the primary data sources for this research was a file of all crypto-STRs received at FIU Ireland in 2021. These represent the raw data that is transformed by the FIU into financial intelligence for dissemination to law enforcement. This process bridges the information deficit and enables money laundering investigations and prosecutions. The download was completed on 9 April 2022 and represented the state of the GoAML database at that time. As this is one of the few research projects with almost unrestricted access to an operational FIU, and it occurred during a period of regulatory change, this data was extremely valuable and required deep analysis and consideration. This chapter carries out a general analysis of the STRs before moving to a deeper exploration of how VASPs and non-VASP entities view crypto-assets. The chapter concludes by identifying some noteworthy crypto-STRs and final conclusions.
