Introduction to Agro-Textiles: Scope, Applications, and Sustainability Challenges
摘要
Agro-textiles, being one of the fastest growing sectors within technical textiles, comprise woven, nonwoven, and knitted materials specially designed for agricultural, forestry, horticulture, and aquaculture applications. These materials include both natural and synthetic fibers with specially tailored properties like tensile strength, UV resistance, biodegradability, and porosity to meet the agricultural environment’s requirements. The evolution of traditional natural fibers into technical materials has paralleled agricultural growth, with the development of synthetic fibers during the Industrial Revolution. Modern agro-textiles serve various applications like pest control barriers, mulch mats, root nets, shade nets, and protection fabrics while supporting multiple other properties like moisture conservation and reduced chemical inputs. With these developments, the global agro-textile market is expected to grow to USD 24.8 billion by 2035, while India’s market is expected to grow to USD 248.50 million (approximately 2062 crores) by 2033. However, significant sustainability challenges persist, including concerns about microplastic contamination from synthetic materials and waste management. This chapter focuses on agro-textiles, their types, and various applications. The chapter also focuses on the scope of agro-textiles and its sustainability challenges.
