Many domed churches in Wallachia suffered significant damage, sometimes complete collapse, as a result of earthquakes. These damages, documented in chronicles, reports, etc., highlight the vulnerability of domed churches to seismic actions. In numerous cases, earthquakes caused the partial or complete collapse of the towers, affecting not only the structural integrity of the churches but also the artistic and historical values they housed. Moreover, these events led to the need for urgent interventions and reconstructions, which sometimes altered irreversibly their original substance and appearance, in numerous cases, domes and drums being replaced by wooden structures sheathed in metal sheets, changing the imagine of the historical monument. The article presents a synthetic overview of the stylistic evolution of domed churches listed as cultural heritage of Wallachia, in relation to the materials (with a focus on masonry) and construction techniques. It discusses the specific types of damage caused by earthquakes and the post-seismic interventions, illustrated through case studies documented in the archive funds of the National Heritage Institute of Romania.

摘要
