Historic Roof Structures in the Western Part of Romania – Structural Layout and Construction Techniques
摘要
Architecture in the western part of Romania has been shaped throughout history by influences from various regions and cultures, leading to a great diversity in the aesthetic features of buildings, as well as in the structural systems and details used. Unfortunately, many professionals involved in conserving these buildings tend to focus primarily on protecting the general appearance and strengthening the structure without fully acknowledging or highlighting the value of the more hidden elements. One of the most interesting aspects of these historic buildings is their roof structures. Despite being highly unique and adapted to their context, relatively few studies focus on understanding the structural configuration, aesthetics, and details of these roofs. However, previous multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary studies of historic timber roof structures in this region have shown that these roofs hold significant value from various perspectives, including aesthetic, architectural, structural, and symbolic. Therefore, this paper aims to raise awareness about the evolution of historic roof structure types in the western part of Romania, emphasizing their general layout in relation to the architectural style and urban context of the buildings, as well as the main joining details used from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. This study represents the first comprehensive and interdisciplinary database of roof structures in the western part of Romania, which could serve as a valuable resource for researchers and professionals involved in restoring these structures.
