This chapter explores Hans Jonas’s concerns about the role of technology in modern civilisation. We begin by demonstrating that he distinguishes between pre-modern technique (German: Technik) and modern technology (German: Technologie), emphasising the transformation of knowledge into a tool for domination. Jonas argues that technology has become a driving force shaping human destiny, often surpassing political decision-making. He criticises the utopian vision of unregulated technological progress and stresses the need for ethical responsibility. For him, the increasing power of modern technology, especially in biotechnology, raises critical questions about human control over nature. Jonas introduces the concept of “heuristics of fear”, urging caution in technological advancements to prevent catastrophic consequences. He highlights the interplay between science and technology, warning against their unchecked expansion. Ethics, he argues, must serve as a counterbalance to technological power. Finally, we will demonstrate that Jonas is not a technophobe, advocating instead for responsible innovation to protect both humanity and nature.

摘要
