Leadership within contemporary organizations can be categorized as both formal leadership and informal leadership. Formal leadership is provided by formal leaders holding designated positions within an organization’s official hierarchy. In contrast, informal leadership results when other organizational members follow the direction and leadership of informal leaders. Both formal and informal leadership results when organizational members engage in followership of formal or informal leaders.
