With the emergence of early blockchain platforms, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, blockchain technology has attracted significant attention from the industry, media, and researchers. Early narratives anticipated a profound disruption of existing business models, predicting that distributed ledgers would render trusted intermediaries obsolete. Yet more than a decade later, intermediaries, such as online marketplaces and hotel-booking platforms, remain resilient, often stronger than before. The keynote begins by addressing early misconceptions about the technology, discusses technical challenges, reflects on selected research works at the intersection of BPM and blockchain, and outlines potential directions for future research on blockchain technology from a Business Process Management perspective.
