Smart Technologies for a Sustainable Future: Enabling Reuse and Recycling in the Digital Circular Economy
摘要
To achieve the sustainability goals a shift from regular system of “take–make–dispose” economy towards a circular economy (CE) model is required for climate resilience. Under this paradigm, nowadays the CE initiative are used alongside the latest digital technologies (DTs) with circular economy principles is prominent which is referred digital circular economy (DCE). This chapter explores these innovative technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and big data, based DCE models are highly relevant to maximize reuse, recycling, and resource efficiency. By enabling smarter waste tracking, automated sorting, product lifecycle monitoring, and transparent recycling chains, these models are bridging critical gaps in resource management. Based on the secondary data sources the chapter offers theoretical foundations of circular economy and digital transformation along with the digital circular economy. It highlights how emerging technologies enables smart waste management in modern ecosystems through reverse logistics, waste management, and e-waste recycling to demonstrate their impact on resource management systems. Furthermore, the chapter details the benefits of adopting DCE practices for triple bottom line and also acknowledges challenges in the implementation of DCE based models in current scenarios. Finally, implications are provided for the application of DCE models for adopting digital technologies in order to achieve a circular and waste-free economy. Towards the end, scope for further research and limitations of present study are discussed.
