Creativity in Athlete Selection: Integrating Creative Approaches to Assessing, Evaluating, and Developing High Performers
摘要
Idealistically, one could argue that sport systems should keep all interested athletes involvedfor as long as they would like; however, due to resource constraints, coaches and selectors are obligated to make decisions on which athletes are given certain opportunities at specific times in development (i.e., athlete selection) and which athlete are not (i.e., de-selection). While the evidence tells us coaches and selectors consider an athlete’s physical and physiological qualities through fitness tests and other assessments, we know that coaches make sophisticated decisions that consider a wide range of other abilities, skills, and characteristics when making selections—creativity being one of them. This chapter will discuss the ways in which creativity enters the selection decision-making equation for both selectors (coaches) and selectees (athletes). We will discuss some strategies for assessing and measuring creativity, while also acknowledging the challenges and concerns in doing so.
