Creativity and Co-participation

Anchored in Glǎveanu and Beghetto’s (2021) definition of creativity, this chapter theorizes on the ways that parent–child co-participation in sports presents unique opportunities to experience creativity. We suggest that a particular combination of settings, activities, and relationships can enhance the benefits of sport participation and offer innovative ways to engage. Specifically, when involved in co-participation, parents and children can adopt open-ended approaches while engaging in complementary participation pathways, experience non-linearity while moving between multiple roles, embrace future-orientations through the activity adaptations they create to foster long-term participation and benefit from plural perspectives throughout shared sports experiences. Following this theoretical discussion, we suggest several practical ways that the creativity principles found in non-traditional co-participatory sport may be translated to more traditional sport structures, thus extending the potential benefits of co-participation and its baked-in creative opportunities.
