This chapter explores the role of learning communities in supporting the acquisition and maintenance of Greek as a heritage language in diasporic contexts. Heritage language learning requires authentic communicative environments where learners can develop linguistic competence through meaningful interaction, cultural engagement, and participation in community practices. Within this framework, the chapter examines the action Communities of Learning from the program Greek Language Primary and Secondary Intercultural Education in the Diaspora, first implemented 12 years ago. The study investigates how this initiative shaped learners’ experiences and contributed to the long-term development of both language skills and cultural identity. To evaluate its impact, qualitative data were collected in November of 2023 through semi-structured focus group interviews with former student participants. Their reflections provide valuable insights into the enduring influence of learning communities on language proficiency, sense of belonging, and cultural continuity across generations. The findings suggest that community-based educational initiatives not only enhance linguistic outcomes but also foster intergenerational connections and strengthen identity in diasporic settings. The chapter argues that intentionally structured learning communities offer sustainable models for heritage language education and contribute significantly to the preservation of linguistic and cultural heritage in multilingual societies.

摘要
