The Importance of Mestre Moraes and the Grupo de Capoeira Angola Pelourinho in the Global Consolidation of Capoeira
摘要
The objective of this chapter focuses on the importance of a specific individual, Mestre Moraes, and the establishment of the Grupo Capoeira Angola Pelourinho (GCAP). We posit that both were instrumental in the consolidation of capoeira Angola in Brazil and the rest of the world. The chapter also explores the dissemination of the myth of Engolo to a community of capoeiristas, intellectuals, and activists. The chapter is structured into five sections. The introductory section describes the presence of Bahian capoeiristas in Rio de Janeiro. Subsequently, the second section delves into the early years of Mestre Moraes in that city. The third section describes the emergence of GCAP in Rio de Janeiro and its subsequent relocation to Salvador. Finally, the chapter addresses GCAP’s relationship with American Afrocentric intellectuals and activists.
