Romance Fraud in China
摘要
This chapter examines pig butchering scams and their impact on victims, focusing on the intersections of gender, culture, and emotional manipulation. Based on interviews with six victims and nine Chinese police officers, it situates these scams within broader structural inequality and gendered vulnerability. It argues that women are disproportionately affected due to economic insecurity, social expectations, and cultural norms. Emotional coercion, combined with gender inequality, creates layered harm that is emotional, economic, and structurally embedded. By highlighting these gendered and cultural dynamics, the chapter offers a more nuanced understanding of victim vulnerability and structural violence in the context of pig butchering scams.
