Historic towns of India are custodians of sacred ecological wisdom, the tangible and the intangible heritage, and the traditional knowledge systems associated with the local community, planned in a strategic location. However, in many towns and cities, identity and character are gradually getting lost due to neglect, lack of awareness, and unregulated development. The central question of the research is how the historic towns in India (the case of Puri and Bishnupur) are living in recent times with the urban planning regulations and continuity of the associated sacred ecological wisdom towards a sustainable future. The chapter aims to analyze the existing urban planning measures and their impact on the sacred ecological wisdom of the historic towns of Puri in Odisha and Bishnupur in West Bengal. Hence, it elaborates on the sacredness of these towns, the cultural heritage, a thorough literature review, visual observations, and perception surveys of the tourists and locals. And proposes suitable recommendations with the need for a new methodological balanced approach to urban planning as the way forward.

摘要
