Hindu Spatial Concepts in Contemporary Urban Design
摘要
This chapter examines spatial concepts within Hindu textual traditions and their potential application to contemporary urban design challenges at the intersection of technology and ecology. Through analysis of Vedic cosmology, Upanishadic philosophy, and Vastu Shastra principles, the research identifies fundamental spatial paradigms including the concept of ākāśa (sacred space), mandala-based organization, and the integration of microcosmic and macrocosmic dimensions. These concepts reveal an approach to space that transcends the conventional dichotomy between technological progress and ecological integrity. The findings suggest that Hindu spatial wisdom offers valuable design frameworks for creating urban environments that harness technological benefits while maintaining ecological balance and spiritual wellbeing. By applying these principles through specific design strategies including sacred geometry in computational design, hierarchical spatial organization for digital infrastructure, and technologically-enhanced integration of natural elements, the chapter proposes an ecotheological design approach that addresses contemporary urban challenges. This approach contributes to emerging conversations about culturally-informed sustainable design and offers pathways to urban spaces that embody both technological sophistication and sacred awareness.
