Speculative Design Meets AI: Exploring Creative Dynamics Through Co-speculative Workshops
摘要
These days, many researchers are exploring speculative design as one of the most popular directions in design research. Speculative design offers a framework for envisioning alternative futures and critically engaging with emerging technologies. This study investigates the collaborative dynamics between AI tools and speculative designers through a series of co-speculative workshops that included open-ended questionnaire studies. We examined the dynamic tensions between speculative designers and AI tools, identifying three primary friction points: (1) disjunction between conceptual intention and visual realisation, (2) cognitive disempowerment under inefficient interaction, and (3) design progression impairment caused by generative instability. The findings highlight the need for improvements in AI-supported speculative design processes, including: Designer Habit Refinement for Speculative AI Tools - logging and reflecting on friction points; New Cognitive Modes for Speculative Designers: reframing AI from a “prompt generator” to a “co-creator” or “critical partner”; Role Clarification for Speculative Designers maintaining human leadership; and Enhancing Transparency in Speculative Design Tools: Implement explainable feedback mechanisms. This study provides deeper insights into speculative research by elucidating the evolving dynamics of human-AI interactions in the design process, offering both theoretical and practical contributions to the optimization and advancement of speculative research and human-computer interaction.
