Analyzing the re-visionary aesthetics of H.D.’s Künstlerroman Asphodel, this chapter studies the ways in which animals write on the palimpsestic layering characteristic of H.D.’s works. The novel’s depiction of a young poet’s struggle to find her voice involves grappling with the inexactness of metaphors—many of which are animal ones. Focusing on Paul Ricœur’s notion of metaphor as a seeing as, the chapter reads such animal figures as a creative re-visioning of the world. H.D. poses this as a kind of writing, where writing is to see, and to see differently requires writing. By studying how animal metaphors create innovative ways of seeing in the novel, the chapter positions them as some of its writers, showing how metaphorical animals are not passive vessels but rather creators who structure Asphodel’s imaging as well as style.
