The paper delves into the very core of the phenomenon of geographical indications. It covers the ways in which recognition or technological protection of GIs is addressed in different legal systems and how different treatment of GIs as collective rights or individual rights comes into being and is protected at local and international levels, with special reference to the current spate of digital intellectual property laws. The research is aimed at reviewing the state of the GIs with their technological protection of the economic welfare of local societies. It will also review how technology impacts the implementation of such technological protections and real-economic practices and activities.
