History of Parathyroid Disorders and Management
摘要
The parathyroid glands have been described as the last endocrine organs to be discovered. This chapter takes the reader through the eventful journey of these tiny glands. Their existence is famously ascribed to Sir Richard Owen’s dissection of an Indian rhinoceros; however other key early descriptions of the parathyroid glands are also discussed. We describe how the function of the parathyroid glands was determined and how these glands were linked to disease thanks to the research over the last couple of centuries. Early parathyroid surgery and its outcomes are reviewed. The chapter then also details the development of cutting-edge technology in parathyroid disorder evaluation and management.
