The Politics of Racism, Falsehoods, and Fearmongering: The Voice Referendum and the Queensland 2024 State Election
摘要
Lying, sowing fear and distrust, and encouraging outright racism and white nationalism, are now common practices on the Australian political playing field. These practices were seen clearly in the lead-up to the 2023 Voice to Parliament referendum, and over a year later with the 2024 Queensland state election, where the denial of First Nations rights was used as a political football to drive votes. The Voice referendum saw politicians and journalists sow the seeds of deceit and distrust and state publicly and in print outright falsehoods about what the Voice would do to, and take from, the ‘average’—read white—Australian. Voters were met with relentless waves of misinformation and fearmongering stirred up by long-held racial misconceptions by settlers keen to maintain the status quo. This practice was used again by Liberal National Party (LNP) politicians in the 2024 Queensland state election, with LNP leader David Crisafulli running his campaign on the promises of denying First Nations rights, specifically ending Queensland’s pathway to Truth-Telling and treaty. This paper considers the role of settler politicians and journalists in actively deterring settler Australians from listening to First Nations voices.
