This chapter presents a textual analysis of Ibn Sahnūn’s Adab al-mu’allimin, or, Rules of Conduct for Teachers—one of the earliest classical Islamic texts on education. We conducted this analysis to provide contemporary educational leaders working in Western contexts more direct access to core Islamic ideas concerning the nature and dynamics of educational leadership. After three rounds of thematic, axial coding of an interlinear translation of the original Arabic, we identified four salient themes, including the holiness of teachers, the centrality of focus, advocating for an ethic of care, as well as a variety of pedagogic principles. We outline specific citations from the primary source text and compare each theme to relevant threads within contemporary education research. We hope that this chapter will contribute to a broader trend of advocating for the utility of philosophical and religious texts across a variety of applied Western educative contexts.

摘要
