Irritable Bowel Syndrome
摘要
This chapter discusses management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a disorder of gut-brain interaction causing discomfort, distress, and poor quality of life for millions worldwide. This chapter outlines IBS prevalence, risk factors and disparities. Three brief screening tools: Irritable Bowel Severity Scoring System, Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale for IBS, and IBS Quality of Life are presented and discussed. Additionally, this chapter describes evidence-based non-pharmacological approaches to IBS management including trigger monitoring and techniques addressing visceral sensitivity. Integrative medicine interventions include FODMAP dietary modification, herbs/supplements (psyllium, peppermint oil) and acupuncture. A case vignette illustrates the presented concepts in action. The chapter concludes with Clinical Pearls, Frequently Asked Questions, and Resources.
