Climate monitoring systems using IoT (Internet of Things) are crucial because they provide real-time data that directly benefits the areas to be monitored. The use of IoT in climate monitoring for rural areas faces challenges due to the characteristics of the area, technological, economic and social limitations. This study aims to conduct a literature review of IoT technologies that have been recently implemented using IoT for climate monitoring. This literature review explores the state of the art of IoT-based concepts for climate monitoring in rural areas. In this review, 9 studies were selected from the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases between 2019 and 2024. The selected studies attempt to answer three research questions related to technological challenges, climate monitoring variables and climate sensors.
