Informal waste pickers play a crucial role in urban sustainability, yet they lack the needed access to formal systems or digital tools, and they often work in marginalized, unsafe conditions. Empowering waste pickers located in Iran can be achieved through the easing of waste collection, storage, sale, and payment via a low-tech, SMS-based system. We developed and tested RecySack, a low-tech SMS platform for improving waste pickers’ working conditions, supported by user-centered research. RecySack supports direct buyer connections, price transparency, safer working conditions, and economic stability while promoting urban environmental goals and inclusivity.
