Physical Examination of the Donkey and Their Hybrid Crosses
摘要
Physical examination of the donkey and their hybrid crosses (mules and hinnies) is performed in the same manner as in horses. Note that both mules and hinnies may be less trusting than donkeys and it may be more challenging to obtain their heart rate and temperature. Particular attention should be paid to behavioral changes as pain is not manifested as overtly in donkeys and their hybrids compared to horses. Further, their increased metabolic efficiency for nutrient absorption increases their risk for endocrinopathies, and subclinical laminitis can be overlooked even in the absence of overt lameness due to their natural stoicism. The physical examination should always be performed in a systematic manner, utilizing both distance and hands-on examination, to avoid missing subtle clues that may alter the clinical course of disease workup.
