China’s Plastic Waste Effect on Air Quality
摘要
With the rising population, demand for plastic is on the rise and tremendously increasing the plastic waste generation. China, being the largest producer and consumer, is facing detrimental effects to its air quality, with overpopulation being the main reason for the aforementioned chain of increases. This paper delves through China’s past and current practices with plastic production, consumption, imports, waste management, and its effects on their air quality, with a special focus on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei cluster and the Shandong area and their particulate matter levels. In addition, a comparative analysis is carried out with Japan, as it has proven to be successful in managing this problem locally. The paper uncovers the governmental initiatives aimed at mitigating air quality depletion, such as the plastic waste import ban. And lastly, a sustainability package is proposed covering social, economic, and environmental practices to improve plastic waste management and air quality.
