Solid Waste Management: Achievements and Challenges in Enhancing Sustainability at a Brazilian Higher Education and Research Institution
摘要
An effective waste management system poses a significant challenge for cities striving for sustainability. In this context, universities must demonstrate how they implement such a system—not only by incorporating the topic into their curricula but, more importantly, by applying these concepts in their operational practices. Universities generate a substantial quantity and diverse types of waste—some akin to household waste, while others are hazardous. The objective of this study is to present the ongoing efforts of a Higher Education Research Institution located in São Paulo, Brazil, to develop sustainable initiatives aimed at preventing health and environmental impacts, mainly by minimising waste and, most importantly, implementing effective hazardous waste management. This case study employed a three-phase methodological approach. First, a comprehensive review of the scientific literature was conducted to identify the best practices in sustainable waste management within Higher Education and Research Institutions. Second, an in-depth analysis of current regulations and institutional documents was implemented, encompassing internal policies, databases, and operational procedures adopted by the institution under study. Third, the potential for reusing organic waste produced by the institution’s university restaurant was assessed. To evaluate both the sustainable actions undertaken and the challenges encountered to date, a comparative analysis was carried out using a framework of 15 best practices identified during the literature review. Of these, ten have already been implemented by the institution. The remaining five—considered highly relevant—will be submitted to the institution’s administration as recommendations for future accomplishment. A Solid Waste Management Program does not require significant financial investment but rather relies on trained human resources and continuous community awareness efforts to ensure the permanence of ongoing initiatives and the implementation of new ones. Beyond the localised positive impacts, this knowledge could serve as a representative case for similar institutions, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and institutional integration.
