Sustainability in Higher Education in Brazil: An Overview of Contributors to the Literature

Sustainability in higher education has emerged as a key research area globally, with Brazilian higher education institutions (HEIs) playing a significant role in advancing sustainable practices and education. This paper offers a comprehensive overview of key contributors to the literature on sustainability in higher education in Brazil, highlighting the substantial efforts and innovative initiatives undertaken by various universities to integrate sustainability into their curricula, campus operations, and community engagements. The study examines research on sustainability in higher education in Brazil from 2015 to 2024, utilizing a quantitative approach through a bibliometric review. A total of 158 articles were included for bibliometric analysis utilizing the VOSviewer software. Campus sustainability initiatives, community engagement, policy and governance, and interdisciplinary research. Key publications and journals featuring Brazilian contributions are also discussed. This paper underscores the transformative impact of these institutions in promoting sustainable practices and education, positioning Brazil as a leader in the global sustainability discourse within higher education. Through this examination, the paper aims to illuminate the critical role that higher education plays in driving sustainability initiatives and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and social responsibility, thereby contributing to the broader objectives of sustainable development. It concludes with recommendations for enhancing sustainability practices in Brazilian universities and calls for continued research and collaboration to strengthen the impact of higher education in addressing the pressing challenges of sustainability in a rapidly changing world.
