Epilogue: Integration of Emotions and Values in Organizational Life
摘要
This epilogue revisits chapters of the Handbook to reflect on how values and emotions are essential for fostering knowledge development and engagement within organizations, particularly during periods of turbulence and change. We propose an interconnected process for understanding emotions and values in institutions that unfold in three key steps. First, the inquiry emphasizes that emotions and values are often ambiguous and difficult to identify, requiring exploration of underlying concerns in emerging situations—such as identifying vulnerabilities and determining what is truly at stake. Second, this inquiry fosters recognition and collective sensemaking, allowing organizational members to articulate and reflect on the values at play. This process raises questions about appropriate responses to challenges and the rationales behind those choices. Finally, the third step involves action, in which the focus shifts to how actions communicate values and address both existing and emerging concerns. By engaging in this exploration, organizations can better navigate complex social dynamics and enhance their capacity for ethical sensemaking and action in a rapidly changing world.
