This chapter explores Bhabha’s (The location of culture, Routledge, 1994) concept of Third Space as a space where diverse community members can explore selfhood, identity and collaboration. It situates Community (or Heritage) Language (CL) schools as Third Spaces which transcend the physical limitations of being borrowed spaces; established by women, led by women, CL schools create a Third Space where children’s cultural and linguistic funds of knowledge are intentionally welcomed and strengthened. This chapter utilises ethnography to describe how research encounters beyond the workshop space led to a deeper understanding of participants and the Third Spaces they had created. It focuses on the experience of a CL teacher who established a school in the face of opposition from her community and how this experience influenced the fictional world co-created in the process drama.
