In this chapter, Virginia Fiume reflects on her journey as a transnational activist, journalist, and convenor engaged in defending democracy, civil rights, and participatory politics in Europe. Rooted in a humanities background and inspired by early digital and anti-globalisation movements, she has navigated multiple professional paths—from media and civil service in Palestine to activism and policy engagement in Brussels. The work she has done with Eumans between 2019 and 2023 highlights the potential and limitations of EU-level instruments like the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) to foster transnational democratic mobilisation. Fiume critically examines the fragility of liberal democracy, the crisis of representation, and structural inequalities that hinder inclusive participation—particularly for migrants, queer communities, and women. Drawing on personal experience with civil disobedience, she advocates for a more intersectional, deliberative, and participatory model of democracy. Her activism, especially during the pandemic and in response to EU institutional inertia, showcases both the power of coalition-building and the need for institutional reform. She calls for reclaiming democratic spaces beyond electoral cycles and for bridging the gap between grassroots movements and formal institutions, insisting that hope, action, and solidarity are the essential drivers of democratic renewal in an era of democratic contestation.

摘要
