Technology’s quick development has drastically changed the educational landscape by providing creative ways to improve student performance. However, a significant obstacle to sustainable growth and economic advancement in Africa is an ongoing lack of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) competence. The issue has been made worse by low academic achievement in STEM disciplines, especially science and mathematics, which has reduced the number of qualified workers in engineering, technology, and related sectors. To address this gap, Professor Arnesh Telukdarie, an expert in digital transformation at the Johannesburg Business School, spearheaded the development of the STEM App, a digital platform designed to improve STEM education accessibility and effectiveness for Grade 12 learners in South Africa. The initiative was driven by the alarming decline in student performance in STEM subjects and the socio-economic barriers limiting access to quality education. This case study examines the development, difficulties, and effects of the STEM App while examining South Africa's broader educational system and how technology may help close the achievement gap. It offers perspectives on how technological interventions can influence STEM education in emerging economies by highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of digital learning platforms.
