A number of issues have been identified in literature as hindrances to a sustainable, low carbon and equitable energy system in South Africa. These include the overreliance on coal, energy security, the cost of new technologies, and the complex South African triple challenge of poverty, inequality, and unemployment. Applying energy transition theory frameworks rooted in scholarly work emerging from socio-technical transformation research done in the last two decades, the paper explores how green hydrogen (GH2), powerto-X (PtX), and the economy emerging along their respective value chains can provide potential solutions to these challenges.

摘要

A number of issues have been identified in literature as hindrances to a sustainable, low carbon and equitable energy system in South Africa. These include the overreliance on coal, energy security, the cost of new technologies, and the complex South African triple challenge of poverty, inequality, and unemployment. Applying energy transition theory frameworks rooted in scholarly work emerging from socio-technical transformation research done in the last two decades, the paper explores how green hydrogen (GH2), powerto-X (PtX), and the economy emerging along their respective value chains can provide potential solutions to these challenges.
