In recent years, monitoring Earth conditions has become a topic of crucial relevance. The accomplishment of this objective requires dedicated environmental and economic policies as well as the promotion of proper social behaviours. Socially sustainable actions, indeed, affect all national policies to reduce CO2 emissions. The present chapter relies on data on metric tons per capita emissions of CO2 retrieved in the World BankWorld Bank database and investigates trends over time in CO2 emissions in 151 countries between 1960 and 2018. Outcomes reveal that, throughout the observed time interval, Middle-East countries experienced a faster increase in CO2 emissions. These results remark the intense mining activity in these regions rich in oil plants, still constituting the basis of the global productive system. Since the production relies essentially on the combustion of fossil fuels, the attainment of emissions’ reduction objectives within the recommended timeframe seems to be a remote possibility. Nevertheless, it is crucial to promote innovative policies and incentives to favour renewable energies and reduce the dependence from fossil fuels. Improvements in the environmental awareness of local communities and international cooperation seem to be crucial tools to face this global challenge. Only through a collective effort it could be possible to invert this trend thus ensuring a more environmentally sustainable future.

摘要
