The Challenge of Sustainable Development Indicators
摘要
United Nations Sustainable Development GoalsSustainable development goals (SDGs) are intended to provide an effective framework monitoring Sustainable Development (SD) progress in a global socioeconomic perspective, and a kaleidoscopic representation of SD dimensions. Nevertheless, the efforts directed at the attainment of SDGs, e.g. an economic growthEconomic growth able to preserve and equally distribute natural resources as well as human-produced goods and services, seem to be only partly effective. A continuous monitoring system based on few ‘pillar and thematic’ indicatorsIndicators, instead of a more extensive information dashboard that can be redundant and plethoric, is the operational proposal introduced in the present book. Based on these premises, we proposed an in-depth analysis of spatio-temporal trends of paradigmatic sustainabilitySustainability indicatorsIndicators released by the World BankWorld Bank, as related to the main areas of interest for sustainable development, as well as policy topics connected with the maintaining of peace through the establishment of solid institutions. These indicatorsIndicators were specifically selected as covering, directly or indirectly, all the SDGs from multiple perspectives. These indicatorsIndicators have been investigated continuously along a time period covering about 60 years (approximately from 1960 to 2020). The analysis consists of a visual data description through maps, followed by a descriptive scrutiny of the main statistics at the global scaleScale. In addition, some basic results from multivariate exploratory analysis completes the investigation, offering graphical plots that act as a further visual aid to better understand the spatio-temporal dynamics associated with individual indicatorsIndicators, when appropriate. Such information, scrutinized year by year and country by country, may effectively provide the necessary operational base to any policy action, indicating advancement and critical issues that can be removed with an appropriate strategic management of development paths.
