Mohammad Daoud, also known as Sardar Daoud, the eldest cousin of the Shah, played a key role in Afghanistan’s monarchy, both as a contributor and a challenger. He significantly contributed to the governance and development of Afghanistan by his pragmatic and strict policies and authoritarian modernization projects which simultaneously challenged the country’s gradual democratization and political reforms initiated by the Shah and the broader royal family.
