A girder, or a primary supporting member, supports beams and stiffeners. In contrast to the beams which are designed mainly against bending moment, girders are designed against bending and shearing. In this chapter, rational design of girders is discussed, touching upon optimum proportion, relative displacement at supports, characteristics of shear deflection, and precautions to arrange a large opening on girder web plate with simple formulae expressing the secondary bending stresses induced on both the narrow sides of the large opening.

摘要

A girder, or a primary supporting member, supports beams and stiffeners. In contrast to the beams which are designed mainly against bending moment, girders are designed against bending and shearing. In this chapter, rational design of girders is discussed, touching upon optimum proportion, relative displacement at supports, characteristics of shear deflection, and precautions to arrange a large opening on girder web plate with simple formulae expressing the secondary bending stresses induced on both the narrow sides of the large opening.
