Selection of materials is very important in structure design, because it directly affects ship cost and strength. Hence, the structure designer should know well the characteristics of materials, especially newly developed ones. In this chapter, materials used for ship hull structures are explained from viewpoint of selection of steel grade with respect to fracture toughness and strength, scattering of mechanical and physical properties, etc.

Selection of materials is very important in structure design, because it directly affects ship cost and strength.
